About

QuillBot is an AI writing and paraphrasing tool founded in 2017 by three students in the United States. It was acquired in 2021 by Course Hero, now part of Learneo, and has become one of the most widely used writing tools among students.

Students, researchers, writers and non-native English speakers use QuillBot to rephrase sentences in different styles, check grammar, summarise long text, detect AI-generated writing, generate citations and translate content.

As of October 2026, QuillBot has a Free plan, Premium at $19.95 a month, about $13.31 a month on a semi-annual plan or $8.33 a month billed annually ($99.95 a year), and Team plans with lower per-user prices. There is no free trial, but QuillBot offers a 3-day money-back guarantee.

Features and integrations

  • Paraphraser: Rewrites text in several modes, such as Standard, Fluency, Formal and Academic.

  • Grammar Checker: Fixes spelling, grammar and punctuation errors.

  • Summariser: Condenses long articles and papers into key points or short paragraphs.

  • AI Detector: Checks whether text appears to be AI-generated.

  • Citation Generator: Creates citations in formats such as APA, MLA and Chicago.

  • Plagiarism Checker and Translator: Premium includes plagiarism scans and translation into many languages.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Excellent paraphrasing: QuillBot's rephrasing modes are its standout feature.
  • Many tools in one: Grammar, summarising, citations and AI detection come together.
  • Cheap on annual billing: Premium is affordable when paid yearly.
  • Generous free plan: Core features are usable without paying.

Cons

  • Monthly plan is pricey: $19.95 a month is much higher than the annual rate.
  • Output still needs review: Paraphrased text can change meaning or sound unnatural.
