About
Cursor is an AI-first code editor made by Anysphere, a startup founded in 2022 by four MIT graduates. It is built on top of Visual Studio Code, so it supports most VS Code extensions, themes and keyboard shortcuts while adding deeply integrated AI.
Developers use Cursor to write and refactor code with natural-language instructions, let agents make changes across many files, run background agents in the cloud and get fast autocomplete with its Tab feature. It has become one of the most popular tools for AI-assisted and agent-driven software development.
As of October 2026, Cursor has a free Hobby plan, Pro at $20 a month, Pro+ at $60 a month and Ultra at $200 a month for individuals, plus Teams at $40 per user per month and Enterprise pricing. Paid plans include a monthly pool of usage credits, and annual billing saves about 20%.
Features and integrations
-
Agent Mode: Describe a change in plain language and Cursor's agent plans and edits code across multiple files, runs commands and iterates on errors.
-
Tab Autocomplete: Predicts your next edit, not just the next word, and can suggest multi-line changes as you type.
-
Background and Cloud Agents: Agents can work on tasks in the cloud while you continue coding, then present the changes for review.
-
Codebase Understanding: Cursor indexes your project so chat and agents can answer questions and make changes with full context.
-
Model Choice: Users can pick models from providers such as OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, along with Cursor's own fast coding models.
-
VS Code Compatibility: Most VS Code extensions, settings and shortcuts work in Cursor, which makes switching easy.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Powerful agents: Cursor is widely regarded as one of the most capable tools for multi-file AI code changes.
- Familiar interface: Being built on VS Code means little learning curve for most developers.
- Fast autocomplete: Tab completions are quick and often anticipate the next edit accurately.
- Flexible model choice: Developers can switch between leading AI models depending on the task.
Cons
- Usage-based costs: Heavy agent use can exhaust the Pro credit pool, pushing users to pricier plans or overages.
- Pricing changes: Cursor has changed its billing model several times, which has frustrated some users.
- Separate editor: Teams standardised on JetBrains or other IDEs must switch editors to get Cursor's full experience.
