About

Grok is an AI assistant built by xAI, the AI company Elon Musk founded in 2023. It launched in November 2023 and is available on grok.com, in the Grok mobile apps and inside X, the social network formerly known as Twitter.

Grok’s main difference from other assistants is its live connection to posts on X, which makes it popular for following breaking news, trends and public conversations. It also handles general writing, coding help, reasoning tasks and image and video generation through its Grok Imagine feature.

As of October 2026, Grok has a free tier with usage limits. Standalone plans are SuperGrok Lite at $10 a month, SuperGrok at $30 a month and SuperGrok Heavy at $300 a month for the highest limits. Grok is also bundled into X Premium subscriptions, and developers pay per token through the xAI API.

Features and integrations

  • Real-Time X Data: Grok can search and summarise current posts on X, which helps with tracking breaking news, public reaction and trending topics.

  • Web Search and DeepSearch: Grok searches the web and can run deeper multi-step research that compiles findings from many sources into one answer.

  • Grok Imagine: Generates images and short videos from text prompts inside the Grok app, with higher limits on paid plans.

  • Reasoning Modes: Grok offers thinking modes for harder maths, logic and coding problems, with the most powerful multi-agent mode reserved for SuperGrok Heavy.

  • Voice Mode: The mobile apps support spoken conversation with Grok for hands-free questions and brainstorming.

  • xAI API: Developers can build Grok models into their own apps through the xAI API, billed separately per token.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Live social context: Access to posts on X gives Grok an edge for questions about what is happening right now.
  • Low-cost entry plan: SuperGrok Lite at $10 a month is one of the cheaper ways to get higher limits on a major AI assistant.
  • Image and video included: Grok Imagine lets users create visuals without a separate tool.
  • Multiple ways to access: Grok is available as a standalone app, inside X and through an API.

Cons

  • X content varies in quality: Answers that rely on posts from X can reflect rumours or opinions, so important claims need checking.
  • Top features are expensive: The strongest reasoning mode requires the $300 SuperGrok Heavy plan.
  • Two overlapping subscription paths: Grok is sold both as SuperGrok and through X Premium, which can make it unclear which plan to choose.
