Midjourney
About
Midjourney is an AI image generator that turns text prompts into artwork, illustrations, photo-style images and short videos. It is run by an independent research lab founded by David Holz and opened to the public in 2022, and it is widely seen as a leader in artistic style and visual polish.
Designers, marketers, illustrators and content creators use Midjourney for concept art, mood boards, social media visuals, ad creatives, book covers and product mock-ups. It works through its own web app and through Discord, where it first launched.
As of October 2026, Midjourney has no free plan or free trial. Basic costs $10 a month, Standard $30, Pro $60 and Mega $120, with 20% off for annual billing. All paid plans include commercial use, but companies earning more than $1 million a year must use Pro or Mega.
Features and integrations
-
Text-to-Image Generation: Midjourney creates artwork, illustrations and photo-style images from text prompts, with fine control over aspect ratio, stylisation and variation.
-
Style and Character References: Users can supply reference images to carry a specific style or character across new generations, helping keep visuals consistent across a project.
-
Image Editor: The web app includes tools to edit parts of an image, expand the canvas beyond its original frame and upscale results for higher-resolution use.
-
Image-to-Video: Midjourney can animate still images into short video clips, giving creators simple motion content for social media and presentations.
-
Fast and Relax Modes: Every plan includes fast GPU time, and Standard and higher plans add unlimited Relax mode for slower generations that do not use the fast-hour budget.
-
Stealth Mode and Discord Access: Pro and Mega subscribers can keep their images private with Stealth mode, and all users can generate from the web app or the Midjourney Discord server.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Leading artistic quality: Midjourney is known for strong composition, lighting and style, and often produces striking images with less prompt tweaking than many rivals.
- Consistent visual style: Style and character references let users keep the same look or character across many images, which helps with campaigns, storyboards and brand visuals.
- Commercial rights on all paid plans: Every paid plan allows commercial use, subject to the revenue threshold that requires larger companies to use Pro or Mega.
- Image-to-video included: Users can animate still images into short clips without paying for a separate video tool.
Cons
- No free plan or trial: Users must pay at least $10 for a month of Basic before they can try Midjourney.
- Public images on cheaper plans: On Basic and Standard, everything you create appears in Midjourney's public gallery; private Stealth mode starts with the $60 Pro plan.
- Limited Basic plan: Basic includes about 3.3 hours of fast GPU time, roughly 200 images, and has no unlimited Relax mode, so regular users usually outgrow it quickly.
