About

ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI assistant made by OpenAI. You type or speak a request and it writes, explains, summarises, analyses uploaded files, writes code or creates images. It launched in November 2022 and became the fastest-growing consumer app of its time, which is why many people still use “ChatGPT” as the name for AI chatbots in general.

It suits people who want one assistant that covers a bit of everything: drafting emails and reports, researching topics with web search, working through spreadsheets and PDFs, generating images and getting help with code through Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent.

As of October 2026, ChatGPT has a Free plan, Go at $8 a month (with ads), Plus at $20 a month, and Pro from $100 a month for heavy users. Teams can buy per-seat Business plans, and large organisations negotiate Enterprise contracts. Prices are in US dollars and are localised in some countries, including India.

Features and integrations

  • Web Search and Deep Research: ChatGPT answers current questions with linked sources, and its deep research mode browses many pages over several minutes to return a structured, cited report on a topic.

  • File and Data Analysis: Users can upload PDFs, spreadsheets, slides and images. ChatGPT reads them, runs calculations, compares documents and produces charts, which makes it useful for quick reporting and data checks.

  • Image Generation and Editing: ChatGPT creates images from text prompts and can edit uploaded images inside the same conversation, covering everyday needs such as social graphics, illustrations and mock-ups.

  • Voice Mode: The mobile and desktop apps support real-time spoken conversation, so users can brainstorm, practise a language or get answers hands-free.

  • Custom GPTs and Projects: Users can save instructions, files and context as custom GPTs or Projects for recurring tasks, and share custom GPTs with colleagues or publicly.

  • Codex and App Connectors: Paid plans include Codex, OpenAI's coding agent, and connectors to services such as Google Drive, Gmail and GitHub so ChatGPT can work with your own files and data.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • One app for many tasks: ChatGPT handles writing, research, file analysis, image generation and coding in the same conversation, so most people can cover their everyday AI needs without juggling several tools.
  • Usable free plan: The Free plan includes chat, web search and limited access to advanced features, which lets new users test whether ChatGPT fits their work before paying anything.
  • Strong file and data handling: You can upload PDFs, spreadsheets, slides and images and ask ChatGPT to summarise, compare, calculate or chart the contents, which saves time on routine analysis.
  • Large ecosystem: Custom GPTs, Projects and connectors to apps such as Google Drive and GitHub let individuals and teams build repeatable workflows on top of ChatGPT.

Cons

  • Ads on cheaper plans: The Free and Go plans now show ads, so users who want an ad-free experience need Plus or higher.
  • Confident mistakes: Like all AI assistants, ChatGPT can state wrong facts in a convincing way, so important claims still need to be checked against reliable sources.
  • Frequently changing plans: Plan names, usage limits and included models change often, which makes it harder to know exactly what each tier includes without checking OpenAI's pricing page.
