What is Multimodal AI?

Updated September 21, 2026 Read 3 min

Multimodal AI is artificial intelligence that can understand, combine or generate more than one type of data, such as text, images, audio and video, for example answering questions about a photo or generating an image from text.

Multimodal AI is artificial intelligence that can understand, combine or generate more than one type of data, called modalities, such as text, images, audio and video. A multimodal model can read a chart and explain it, listen to a question and answer aloud, or turn a written description into an image. People experience the world through many senses at once; multimodal AI aims to work the same way.

Key takeaways

  • A modality is a type of data: text, image, audio, video, sensor data and more.
  • Multimodal AI can take multiple modalities as input, produce multiple as output, or both.
  • It works by mapping different modalities into a shared representation.
  • Modern multimodal assistants can see, hear and speak within one conversation.
  • It unlocks tasks like document understanding, visual Q&A and voice assistants.

Multimodal AI explained in simple terms

Ask a friend “what’s wrong with my bike?” while showing them a photo, and they combine your words with what they see to answer. A text-only AI could only read your words. A multimodal AI can look at the photo too: “the chain has slipped off the rear gear.” Combining information across senses gives a far richer understanding.

Types of multimodal AI

TypeInput → outputExample
Vision-language understandingImage + text → textDescribe a photo, read a receipt, explain a chart
Text-to-imageText → imageGenerate an illustration from a prompt
Text-to-videoText → videoGenerate a clip from a description
Speech-to-textAudio → textTranscribe a meeting
Text-to-speechText → audioRead a reply aloud
Any-to-anyMixed inputs → mixed outputsA voice assistant that sees your camera feed and talks back

How multimodal AI works

  1. Modality encoders: each input type is processed by an encoder suited to it: an image encoder for pictures, an audio encoder for sound, a tokenizer for text.
  2. Shared representation: outputs are projected into a common space so the model can relate them, for example linking the word “dog” with pictures of dogs.
  3. Fusion and reasoning: a large model, often a transformer, attends across all inputs together.
  4. Output generation: a decoder produces text, or separate generators create images or audio.

A key milestone was OpenAI’s CLIP (2021), which learned to match images and captions from a very large number of image-text pairs. Later, major labs released models that accept images and text together, and some are trained to be multimodal from the start rather than combining separate systems.

A worked example: an expense assistant

An employee photographs a crumpled restaurant receipt and says, “Log this as a client lunch with Acme.” The multimodal assistant:

  1. Transcribes the spoken request.
  2. Reads the receipt image: restaurant name, date, total and tax.
  3. Combines both into a structured expense entry.
  4. Flags that the tip was handwritten and asks the employee to confirm it.

No single-modality model could do all of this alone.

Business uses

  • Reading invoices, forms, charts and screenshots.
  • Visual product search: “find shoes like this photo”.
  • Customer support that understands screenshots of errors.
  • Quality inspection combining images and sensor data.
  • Accessibility: describing images for blind users.
  • Video analysis and summarisation.

Limitations

  • Models can misread small text, dense tables or charts.
  • Hallucinations can involve details “seen” in an image that are not there.
  • Combining modalities increases compute cost.
  • Images and audio can contain hidden instructions, a security risk known as prompt injection.
  • Privacy concerns rise when systems process faces, voices and personal documents.

Common Use Cases

01

Document understanding

Extract data from invoices, forms, IDs and charts.

02

Visual customer support

Diagnose problems from customer screenshots and photos.

03

Visual search

Let shoppers search with photos instead of keywords.

04

Accessibility

Describe images and scenes for blind and low-vision users.

05

Meeting assistants

Combine audio, slides and chat into summaries and actions.

06

Quality inspection

Combine camera images with sensor readings to detect faults.

Frequently Asked Questions

AI that can understand, combine or generate more than one type of data, such as text, images, audio and video.

A type of data, such as text, image, audio, video or sensor readings.

A chat assistant that answers questions about an uploaded photo, or a voice assistant that sees through a camera and replies aloud.

Each modality is encoded into numbers, projected into a shared space, and processed together by a large model.

Generative AI creates content. Multimodal AI handles multiple data types. Many modern systems are both.
